Tiivistelmä:The risk that regional trade integration in Europe may be associated with increased inequality between regions has long been a key concern of policy markets in Europe. Until recently, this pessimistic view was based on arguments that many mainstream economists of trade and growth would have had a hard time to accept. The author summarizes what we can learn from theories of growth and geography on regional convergence in Europe and then compares these with the evidence. He also asks the question whether regional policies that finance primarily public infrastructure can affect the regional growth patterns in Europe.
