| Tiivistelmä: | On one hand, firms can build on existing capabilities in products and markets with experiences of recent success, on the other hand, they can also intentionally focus on other products and markets in which they aim at building capabilities to address the lack of recent success. This study examines these two processes within project-based industries, identifying replication and renewal as two types of strategies used by firms to add a dynamic component to their capabilities. It is also theorized that the success of each of these strategies is linked to differentiation from competitors, and to firm-level resource availability and industry-level demand characteristics. These propositions are tested by focusing on the film genres offered by the Hollywood studios over a 30-year period. |
