Tiivistelmä:A general definition of countertrade is provided. The motivations for engagement in countertrade of low developed and Eastern European countries are contrasted to those of industrialized countries. The case of Egypt, the economic atmophere that encouraged countertrade, is discussed, export-import ratios, trade imbalance and debt problems are identified, regulation of countertrade is tackled. Today's barter agreements are compared with the old clearing agreements; most important barter and counterpurchase agreements are detailed and evaluated. General Motor's /GM/ project is examined, the benefits both for GM and for Egypt are evaluated. Countertrade opened doors for Egypt but is not a solution to all economic problems.
