Tiivistelmä:There is groving evidence that labour markets are becoming more flexible in many developed economies, but there is little evidence about the effects of flexiblity. This paper uses direct evidence on flexibility at the level of the firm to study how firms react to demand shocks. Flexibility is considered on the intensive margin, reflecting the ability of firms to deploy their workforce as they fish, and the extensive margin, reflecting costs facing firms who wish to adjust employment levels. The results suggest that labour input should be more closely aligned to the business cycle and productivity growth should become less sensitive to the business cycle as flexibility increases.
