| Tiivistelmä: | This study surveys evidence on the history of banks and bank lending from a variety of European countries, and draws conclusions that place English bank development in a more realistic context. The study introduces the main elements of both the theoretical and historical comparison made between English and continental European banks. Then the study notes that England was not alone in not developing universal banking. A brief summary of recent research is provided on the historical developments in those countries that did develop it. The study points to the similarities that the research has found in English and European bank lending to industry. The study highlights a number of weaknesses in the continental systems. |
