Tiivistelmä:This paper describes an exploratory study on the demand for the small company audit in the United Kingdom following the introduction of audit deregulation in 1994. The deregulation of the small company audit provides an opportunity to investigate the need for audits, and to interpret their contribution, if any, both from a conceptual and an economic point of view. This study attempts to identify why voluntary audits may be conducted in the absence of a statutory requirement, and shed some light on the potential demand for audits in the face of deregulation. It also provides some insight into whether the demand for small company audits can be left to market forces, and the potential impact of giving companies the freedom to invest in the audit services they actually need, rather than to thrust a regulatory requirement onto them.
