Tiivistelmä: | This article examines the pecking order of demand for finance within UK small firms. Case study analysis enables in-depth examination of complex interrelationships particularly between demand-side factors such as individual attitudes and preferences and supply conditions. Within case analysis reveals the expected pecking order of internal finance, short-term debt, long-term debt, and external equity. For a majority of cases the pecking order operated only in a truncated form. Cross-case analysis shows that both demand and supply factors influence truncation points but demand appears to take precedence. Where truncation occurs at the point of long-term debt, small firms appear to be financially constrained, but not at external equity. Some cases mitigated potential constraints by financial bootstrapping. |
