Tiivistelmä: | This article aims at investigating the management of one of Britain's most important multinational companies, J.& P. Coats Ltd. from 1890 to 1960. Examined is the system of committees used by the enterprise to control and direct its disparate empire. It is compared what is found in the writings of Alfred D. Chandler, Jr., who held that, in general, British family capital and management inhibited business growth and development, especially compared with firms in the USA. It is concluded that Coats did not fit this interpretation. Coats' approach to management, although in some ways unique, was appropriate to its aims. |
