| Tiivistelmä: | The author of the article states that maritime ports around the continent are moving towards privatization, concessioning and commercialization in a bid to improve efficiency - but labour unions are concerned that such moves may create unemployment for their members. The author states that privatizing ports and harbor operations is intended to attract investment, increase profitability and accountability and also improve operational efficiency - and cut down on corruption and theft which can flourish in a port environment. Almost all the ports being considered for privatization have suffered from congestion which stifles trade and incurs additional cost burdens. |
