Tiivistelmä: | Using a sample of public manufacturing firms in the United States (U.S.), this study analyzes the impact of strategies used to appropriate innovation rents on firm performance. Stronger appropriability on the firm level, gained by patent protection or by the ownership of specialized complementary assets, leads to superiour economic performance. Preemptive patenting allows incumbents (here as: icmbs.) to strengthen their market power. Accordingly with theory, such effect is higher for incmbs. with higher ex-ante market power and facing a higher threat of entry, and lower when R&D competition is described by the discovery of drastic innovations. |
