| Tiivistelmä: | The concepts of technical and compability standards are examined. A taxonomy of standards is presented. The relationship between standards and information economics is highlighted. Some theoretical problems of standards are discussed in relation to network externalities. Technology adoption in the presence of network externalities is considered. It is shown how standards influence the coordination among the companies. The economics of "gateway" technologies is shortly reviewed. Some contradictions in the standardization process are described and analyzed. The roles of committees as well as markets in the coordination of economic activities are contrasted. The effectiveness of cooperative dynamic competition is assessed. |
