Tiivistelmä:To provide some insights into the recent debate about the reasons for the decline in trade union density in Great Britain and Northern Ireland and its potential effect on collective bargaining structures, data were obtained from several surveys and reports. The results of this examination were the following: (1) trade union density is greater by some 10% in Northern Ireland than in Great Britain; (2) people in Northern Ireland view the relationship between capital and labour as one of conflict more frequently than people in Great Britain; (3) 66% of establishments in the private sector in Northern Ireland employing 25 and more have collective bargaining arrangements, (4) the smaller establishments depend heavily on their employers' associations for bargaining skills while the large firms tend to have developed those skills at plant level.
