| Tiivistelmä: | Controversy about the appropriateness and effects of the stabilization programmes associated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has a long tradition and a substantial literature. Both the Fund and its critics like to believe that the programmes have powerful effects, although they disagree over whether these are favourable or malign. The question is important, because the macroeconomic policies of borrowing countries are strongly influenced, not to say dominated, by the terms of the programmes. After briefly surveying the existing literature, the article presents the results of new research about programme impacts. |
