| Tiivistelmä: | The paper offers an economic analysis of the supply and the features of comfort letters with respect to the relationship between underwriters representing the demand side of comfort letters and professional accountants representing the supply side. Special consideration is given to alternative liability regimes. Based on a description of the legal background and major components of comfort letters the rationales underlying the behaviour of the parties involved are pointed out and analysed referring to the theoretical approaches of information economics like monitoring, signaling and risk sharing. It is shown that liability regimes may have considerable effects on the scope of comfort letter supply and the performance of individual engagements (original in German). |
