| Tiivistelmä: | This paper seeks to assess the comparative performance of vertically integrated firms in the Lancashire textile industry. It was found that over the period the performances of integrated firms and of specialized spinning firms were roughly comparable, by using a long-run series rates of return on capital. The findings suggest that the current state of the debate on the relationship between the type of firm and the decline of Lancashire textile industry needs to be modified in a number of directions. The presumed benefits of vertical integration were not always easily achievable because of the fundamental conflict between production and marketing requirements. |
