Tiivistelmä:The idea which holds that market share of a business enterprise is "the key to profitability" is criticized. Through empirical evidence, it is shown that the maxim "the bigger, the better" does not always hold, without, however, going into any analysis of the relationships involved and without presenting a total model. A general model is intended to formulate, to describe and explain when, how and why market share is in some ways related to return on investment. It is argued that both market share and profitability are two dependent variables - dependent on the combined influence of a whole system of factors.
