Tiivistelmä: | Some recent empirical works that attempt to measure the effects of entry - actual or potential - on price-cost margins are reviewed. Three separate models of entry induced market dynamics are successively considered: 1. simple structural models, which do not allow potential entry to have any effects on margins; 2. "models of profit persistence", which allow both actual and potential entry to affect profits, but in such a way as to make it impossible to measure their separate effects; 3. a full structural model, which offsets that last inconvenience. Empirical results gained from the work with all three different models suggest that the effect of entry on profit margins is fairly modest. Some caveats concerning the interpretation of these results are offered. |
