Tiivistelmä:The authors present a comprehensive theory to describe and explain why and how so few new CEOs are able to lead their companies through successful strategic transformation. Not many new CEOs are prepared for what they will face when the board expects major changes. The "4-D" theory represents four alternative scenarios of success and failure, with only one scenario indicating probable success due to a complementary fit between the CEO's intervention approach and surrounding conditions in the organization and market environment. Even if the CEO is skillful, conditions may not be favorable for success. Boards of Directors must carefully select new CEOs who fit with these conditions.
