Tiivistelmä: | Internationally dispersed R&D activities may be organized either by a horizontal division of labour between vertically integrated (hereafter as: vert-int.) R&D units (here as: R&D-u.) located in several countries or by R&D-u. with functionally limited tasks in different host countries grouped around the R&D headquarters in the home country. An extensive survey of 16 leading high-tech (here as: h-t.) business units in Germany and Japan shows that the German business units mostly apply the first alternative, whereas the Japanese ones prefer the second organizational mode. It is found that for large, multinational h-t. firms, the establishment of vert-int. R&D-u. in many countries appears to reveal better competitive results than the assignment of limited tasks to host country R&D units. |
