| Tiivistelmä: | This paper explores the constitutive role of the retailing industry in the on-going process of economic and cultural de-differentiation in the UK. To this end the paper begins by delineating the cultural contours of retailing, indicating the importance of the retail sector to the mode of existence and reproduction of contemporary consumer culture. It then moves on to outline some of the major "logistical" developments which have allowed retailers to "make up" the consumer more intricately than ever before, and which have permitted co-ordinated flexibility in the face of increasingly competitive and dynamic markets. |
