| Tiivistelmä: | The paper presents a quality ladder model of innovation-based growth with geographical transaction costs arising from the incorporation of innovative intermediate goods, produced in one region, into the final consumer good production in another region. It is shown that, due to these costs over the distance, a differentiated spatial pattern of the innovation and production process with regional quality ladders can emerge. |
