Tiivistelmä:Although the interest in new forms of work organization has been steadily increasing over the last ten years, our empirical knowledge as to their economic consequences remains rather limited. The following paper uses a unique longitudinal data set from a large German steel company to study the impact of teamwork and performance related pay on work accidents and absence rates. We show that the introduction of these allegedly innovative work practices have resulted in an increase of overall labor costs. This, in turn, raises the question whether and to what extent the still limited use of many high performance work practices can be explained by the existence of considerable "hidden costs" of organizational reform.
