Tiivistelmä:This article explores whether promoting workers' employability affects labour productivity by exploiting a efficiency-wage model that includes the employer's decision on the provisions of opportunities for enhancing employees' prospects in a context of job insecurity. The authors demonstrate that labour productivity can be improved by making the worker's employability easier, and that the magnitude of improvement is related to the degree of job uncertainty. The other hypotheses tested with same model states that small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) should achieve higher effort levels from employees by fostering workers' employability than large companies. Some evidence to support hypotheses is provided by using sample of Spanish manufacturing firms.
