| Tiivistelmä: | The problem of scheduling several jobs on a single machine is discussed so as to minimize the variance of the jobs' completion times. A general framework is obtained for the change in variance due to the interchange of two specified jobs whose positions have not been fixed in the sequence by exploiting the pooled variance formula. The case when processing times are not known deterministically but are random variables is also considered. Many results applicable to the deterministic case are extended to the random situation. Some results are given for the exponential distribution of processing times. |
