| Tiivistelmä: | Nuclear power and coal have become established as the main alternatives for electricity generation in many countries by now. Both are subject of controversy as a result of the wide range of their environmental impacts. The evolution of policies on acid rain abatement and radioactive waste management in the United Kingdom and West Germany is critically examined, seeking explanation for different courses followed and examining the interactions between the two problems. Although many of the national differences in approach to environmental problems relating to the electricity supply industry appear to be embedded in historical or cultural traditions, political and institutional organization is of considerable importance. |
