Tiivistelmä:An expert system is defined as a computer program using knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems. Knowledge base, working memory, inference engineer, explanation subsystem, and knowledge aquisition subsystem are identified as the five major elements of expert systems. The advantages and limitations of these elements in use are described. It is argued for that expert systems may speed up problem-solving and provide greater consistency of decision making.
