| Tiivistelmä: | Defensive, guarded communication is not always bad; in many cases it is the rational approach to a conversation. Managerial prescriptions and organizational development strategies driven by openness, trust, and candor are challenged. Admonishing organizational members to be open and authentic in their relationships is a value apparently presenting few problems for the consultants outside the system. For those who must live with the consequences of "the truth", a clash of values can cause considerable discomfort - especially if the manager strives for consistency between beliefs, behaviour. We may conclude that it is rational to engage in defensive communication when sharing information that is both important and self-incriminating. |
