Tiivistelmä:For business managers, the operations function is where value-added activities occur when manufacturing products or providing service. Before 1960, the operations function was viewed as a major component in a firm's future profitability, in the 1970s and 1980s, mergers, leveraged buy-outs and short term profits grew in importance, forcing operating managers to make shortsighted and disastrous decisions. Operations function must offer and be viewed as an exciting, dynamic and rewarding management challenge. Ideas that attempt to explain the negative turns of events for America are listed and analyzed. Operations contribution include employee involvement, design for manufacturability, supplier partnership, competitive benchmarking, quality etc.
