Tiivistelmä:In this case study, ethnographic interviews and survey data are used to explore temporary (here as: temp.) work migration (as: migr.) from Komsomolsk (as: K.), a rural Ukrainian (as: U.) town. By the Soviet (as: S.) collapse experts expected temp. work migr. to Western European labour markets. However, this study's data show that in 2002 the majority of temp. K. migr. was to Russia (as: R.) and parts of the former S. Union. Men were more likely than women to engage in temp. work migr. Yet, those women migrating were more likely to migrate to the west. Particularly older, ethnically R. men sought work in the east. Ethnographic data indicate language skills and knowledge of the R. labour markets influencing migr. destination choices. Social contacts helped to bring U. workers east. Survey data show that younger ethnic R. and ethnic U. from all age groups were more likely to seek work within the country or in Western job markets than in Russia.
