Tiivistelmä:The view is challenged that newer, more sophisticated IT (information technology) is the answer to all manufacturing problems. It is argued that the credentials of this latest religion are false. Notably, many plants got no significant gain from CIM (computer integrated manufacturing) and the same is true of CAD (computer-aided design). Quite a lot of plants reported low or negative payoffs from FMS (flexible manufacturing systems). Wrongly applied IT becomes a competitive handicap rather than a competitive advantage. It is pointless to automate for the sake of removing labour problems. It is possible to turn the "problem" into a solution without incurring any of the costs of IT.
