Tiivistelmä:The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between state policy and public opinion. It uses three measures of economic left-right attitudes as dependent variables. Adjustment hypothesis is used as a starting point. A new postulate based on the theory of cognitive dissonance is presented, which is the conditional adjustment hypothesis. It is argued that when investigating the policy-opinion link, the focus should not be on the aggregated public opinion, but we should differentiate according to individual's level of trust in institutions. The findings indicate that while the adjustment hypothesis is rejected in all models, the conditional adjustment hypothesis receives some support. Income is proved to be the strongest determinant of left-right opinions on the individual level.
