Tiivistelmä:It is investigated whether industrialization in France was restrained by paternal capitalism and its management techniques in the 19th century. Using examples from trade to manufacturing industries, the history of family holdings and, in particular, the social and cultural values associated with this form of management is examined. Its conclusion is that, contrary to popular belief, patrimonial interests and industrial obligations are not necessarily incompatible. In the business network, families and/or paternal communities have always been an institution by their nature best suited to support industrial initiative. Moreover, paternal capitalism was extended enough to enhance industrialization.
