| Tiivistelmä: | According to the pessimistic view, the next century will demand wholesale reform. The author's optimism, however, results from a completely different interpretation of the circumstances as they apply, and is based on three types of assumptions. First, the existing trend toward specialization and formalization will continue. Second, the laboratory experimental foundations for economics will stand the test of time. The third assumption is that over the next several decades public funding for basic research in economics will increase to levels comparable to other sciences. From some speculations, it is possible to guess about three different aspects of economics that will determine its stand in 2090: basic research, policy-related research and classroom. |
