Tiivistelmä:A stand-by letter of credit and a bank guarantee at first call are high quality insurance instruments used in international business practice. A stand-by letter of credit has been established in the European banking as well. By its scope of use it might even be used more often than the first call bank guarantees. The use of both instruments will accelerate. At present one can not imagine international business without banking and banks play a major role with both instruments. The power in individual companies sets the form of guarantees. Slovenian companies vary rarely succeed in obtaining one of the two mentioned insurance instruments and usually have to agree to the use of a documentary enactment, which does not cover against all risks. From what we have said it's evident that commercial banks play a major role in international business practice. By issuing quality guarantees they substantially contribute to the success of companies in the international environment.
