Tiivistelmä:In the mid 1970s public scrutiny if not outrage focused on Plasma International (PI). Of course PI told the usual story about the hidden costs of doing business with a commodity as fragile as blood, a business that surely involved research, transportation, sterilization and storage costs. They appealed to the butcher, the brewer, and the baker who famously provide us our dinner not from "benevolence" but from a concern for "their own self- interest." But the PI case is only an example. It raises an oft-repeated issue of general concern, the subject of this article. Herein the author discusses the vexed relationship existing in business today between "social responsibilities" and concern for "self-interest." The author will argue for some social responsibilities within, or occasionally regardless of, self-interest.
