Tiivistelmä:The work described here is part of a more general study which aims to measure the factors affecting a fell runner's performance. In this study the authors consider the effects of slope and workrate. It is difficult to find uniform slopes out of doors and not always convenient for volunteers to run up and down them. Consequently, experiments were carried out using a "Powerjog" treadmill in the Sports Exercise laboratory of the University. An experimentally derived formula has implications for (1) the measurement of a runner's workrate; (2) choice of gradient in running uphill; and (3) the use of Neismith's rule in deriving schedules for fell runners.
