Tiivistelmä:Audit seniors participated in experiments designed to test hypotheses derived from Jeremy Bentham's theory of persuasiveness of evidence. In the predicted direction statistically significant results were found for different characteristics of evidence: directness of evidence, deviations of expectations, composition of the evidence set, source reliability, amount of evidence/number of tests, and dispersion of estimates. In developing theory-based models of professional judgement, expert systems for evaluating evidence and improved frameworks for educating novices, knowledge of the characteristics that make evidence persuasive could be useful.
