Tiivistelmä:Some considerations on the topic of French "decline" are taken as a back up for debate the question of how industrial elites are trained. The abstract rationalism, formalism and generalism of the education at the most prestigious schools are criticized. The selection procedures are overviewed /co-optation within the major corps of civil servants/. Questions raised by training and selection systems are discussed in the light of some economic patterns /the traditional weaknesses of machinery industries and of foreign trade/. The example of top executives from the Corps des Mines is used to highlight various factors in the industrial history of France since 1945 that link the elite's training and its performance.
