| Tiivistelmä: | Among the "timeless articles" from the 1963-1987 volumes of the journal this one /from 1963/ deals with the content and job requirements of managerial work. A realistic job description of a "shop superintendent" is analyzed. Discretion in decisions and differences in responsibility are important components of job content. Specification of the prescribed and discretionary content of the optimum level of work is very useful when a job falls vacant. Prescribed boundaries have to be set on the individual decisions to maintain consistency of cooperative effort. The depth of penetration is explained, using the notions of "immediate" and "extended" command. Remarks on authority are made, the term "decentralization" is examined. |
