Tiivistelmä:Economic transition in Central and Eastern Europe has created a range of problems that by their number, magnitude and urgency are unparalleled in economic history. Never have so many countries wanted to change so much in so little time. With no blueprints of economic transition available, the collapse of the planning system sent the reforming countries of Central Europe into uncharted waters of decision making. The four countries of Central Europe have made unmistakable progress in transforming their economic systems since 1989. This paper argues that the economic benefits of membership in the European Union can be expected to be relatively small.
