Tiivistelmä:It is the main argument of this article, which draws upon the experience of both Britain and the US, that the decline of trade unions, and the associated contraction of collective bargaining, are developments of significance with important, mainly negative, implications for the workplace and the wider society. Although it is possible that trade unions, in both countries could themselves yet restore their fortunes and lead a revival in collective bargaining, it is more probable that such outcomes will require public policy interventions.
