Tiivistelmä:The European Employment Strategy (EES) aims at promoting job quality (henceforth as: j-q.) and gender equality. However, advances on both of these objectives may be important complements to the employment rate targets of the EES. While the European Commission has a broad view of the concept of j-q. in practice, it relies on a selection of labour market type indicators that express little about the j-q. of the actual jobs. Using data from the 2005 European Working Conditions survey, this study analyses j-q. along three dimensions: job content, autonomy and working conditions. It is concluded that gender and occupational status, along with other job characteristics, e.g. working time and sector, have more influence on an individual's j-q. than the country or 'national model'. The results also demonstrate the value of developing j-q. indicators that are both gender sensitive and derived at the level of the job rather than the labour market to advance European Union (EU) policy and academic debate.
