Tiivistelmä:There are about 65 underground coal mines in New South Wales. The variation in accident rates. Potential explanatory variables. The hostile environment theory /geological variation/. Mine size /"size effect"/ as a variation factor. The larger the establishment, the higher the rate of absenteeism, accidents etc. According to the morale theory bureaucratic organizational procedures tend to alienate workers, lead to a loss of morale, which leads directly to higher accident rates. The worker autonomy theory as a base for redesign work helps to reduce accident rates. The poor communication theory. The logic of the association between roof support work and accident rates is irresistible. The role of technology, the bonus system and safety strategy is examined.
