Tiivistelmä:Although the US labor movement remains an important part of the nation's organized economic and political life it is now struggling to reverse its decline in power and membership. The main factors explaining this decline are identified and the most important implications are considered. The labor movement profile is characterized (217 unions, 17,4 million members, the wealth of American Unions and other data are given in sectoral and occupational subdivisions). The labor movement is in a transitional adjustment to the demographic, educational and social profiles of the post-industrial workforce. Unions are attempting to show that collective representation is the most effective path to co-management.
