Tiivistelmä:Five aspects of Japanese organizational practice are commonly cited as factors in the "Japanese economic miracle": lifetime employment; the ties that bind the Japanese worker to his company; management practices for creating contended workers; harnessing group identity and group pressure; the finely graded hierarchy which exists within the Japanese organizations, i. e. a seemingly human-centered, in essence task-centered behavior of managers. The reasons for the popularity of the kanban method within British industry is examined. The British import of Japanese methods is not easy. Not only the cultural differences, but the often neglected, hardly reproducible coercive elements in the Japanese system make it difficult.
