Tiivistelmä:The meaning of Japanization is discussed. The case of the Nissan company in Sunderland is described as a model for "Japanization". It is addressed in terms or Nissan's relations with the central and local state, of the company's control over its physical environment, and suppliers, and of the company's control over its physical company's policy towards the management of human resources. Planning to increase its share in this highly profitable market, Nissan recognized that only the strong (or the subsidized) would survive in the global car industry. A number of social and industrial relations consequences are analyzed and prescribed to be the subject of further research.
