Tiivistelmä:The improvement in budget positions which began in 1994 in many countries is projected to continue, but the pace of consolidation is likely to remain modest over the next two years. For the OECD area as a whole, the general government deficit is projected to continue falling by nearly 1/2 per cent of GDP per year. Yet at around 3 1/2 and 3 per cent of GDP in 1995 and 1996, respectively, it will remain high. Consolidation efforts are generally projected to be insufficient to stabilise or reduce debt levels and the OECD area's gross debt-to-GDP ratio is likely to rise further from around 70 per cent in 1994 to 74 per cent in 1996.
