| Tiivistelmä: | It is questioned how it is possible to model and document the impact of experience in product innovation (henceforth as: invn). This study uses data on the invn. and production (her as: prodn.) histories of over 290 product platforms to explore experience-based learning. The learning curve concepts are extended from their traditional domain, the prodn. process, into the product invn. process to build and test a richer, quantitative model of learning. It is suggested that i. learning occurs differently in the invn. process than in the prodn., and. ii. how and where a firm learns depends partly on the complexity of product components and sub-systems. |
