Tiivistelmä:The new American plants employ higher percentage of blacks than would be expected from their local laborshed. This has resulted primarily from United Auto Workers (UAW) contractual obligations to accept displaced workers. By contrast, the Japanese manufacturers and suppliers locate in areas with few blacks and hire fewer blacks than would be expected from the racial composition of their local laborsheds. In a study the behavior of Japanese auto-related firms in the USA was examined with regard to plant site location and black employment. Comparisons with American firms are provided. Important policy implications of research data are highlighted. The primarily US corporate responsibility for race problem is emphasized.
