| Tiivistelmä: | The reorganization of publicly funded R&D in the UK is described. There is high pressure now on to reevaluate the existing set-up for research and the role of ministerial departments, formally financially independent, to concentrate the efforts devoted to training and to associate industrial partners with the planning and financing of research. It seems that the government is aiming to create 15 centres of excellence around which other universities will gravitate, either specializing in research or in teaching undergraduates. However, the new policy, which increases the role of the financial sector, may suffer from being out of step with nationalistic attitudes in the broader European context. |
